A. Legislative Update
· Refer to Meeting minutes from March 17, 2006.
· Lobbyists – Steve Willard
· Rep. Roger Hunt brought forth 2006 legislation. Summary of 2006 legislative effort. Legislators want compromise between SDATA and opponents. Letters sent to SDPTA and SDOTA asking for feedback from our past legislation as a means to promote discussion amongst these groups.
· Eric Kannegieter joins the group. Bernadette Olson is stepping down.
· Other members are welcome. Please contact any of the current members.
· Brian Gerry prompted a discussion of the legislative process and how we move forward. Terry Truex fielded this question and discussed the history behind the legislative efforts and the challenges which confront us today. These challenges include education of legislators and the general public about the profession of athletic training, making contributions to legislator’s campaigns, and recruiting greater support and involvement from the SDATA membership.
· Ed Olson, South Dakota Senator, came and met with DWU faculty and students this past spring. He made three distinct points regarding our legislative efforts. 1) Education is key; 2) document the attempts to communicate with other groups; and 3) meet personally with each committee member prior to the bill hearing.
· PAC – donations from members are utilized to make donations to legislators campaigns – Steve Willard emphasizes the importance of this action

C. Public Relations Committee Structure
· The SDATA Executive Committee is reviewing the structure of the Public Relations Committee. Currently, Eric Kannegieter is the chair and single member of this committee. The importance of this committee requires the addition of numerous SDATA members from across the state to ensure we are promoting the profession of athletic training to the public, educating key populations about the educational preparation and qualifications of certified athletic trainers, and strategizing with best opportunities and means to focus these efforts.
· Additionally, subcommittees will be formed to allow great focus to the projects and adhere to timelines to complete these goals. Subcommittees could include Internal Marketing, External Marketing,
